Stephen’s Bomber Syntace W30 29er on Project 321

Sapim Wheel Builds

Stephen sold his old bike with some nice DT Swiss wheels on it, but realised that replacement hoops needed to be something special this time.

He’s a bigger dude, riding mainly XC and Trail, and came to us for advice.

We suggested one of the new wider crop of rims, which hold  tyre sidewalls more vertically, and enable more grip and cush on mid/wide tyres (from 2.1-2.4″).

Stan’s Flow EX and Syntace W-series rims are our choices in this space. Both are excellent quality, tubeless up really easily, and build really stiff, reliable wheels.

Stephen wanted something a bit bling, but understated (if you know what I mean?) so opted for the Syntace W30.

These rims are available in several widths from 25mm to 40mm wide, in 26″, 650b and 29er. Weights are really light for such a wide rim. Finish is superb. The matte anodised bead blasted finish is very classy.

Project 321 hubs are a natural choice – they are bombproof in all respects, and look great in anodised red. The new Gen2 rear hub is light at 345g, but will still be rolling in ten years time.

Being a big guy, we ensured a stiff build by specifying plain gauge Sapim Leader spokes on the rear drive side, and front rotor side. Sapim Race double butted spokes on the rear offside and front right, save a little weight. Black brass nipples ensure ease of maintenance in the future.
