Mitch's Mavic Open UST on Velocity Training Wheels

About six months ago we repaired a Zipp rear wheel for Mitch. He was really happy with the service and the build, so he contacted us for a training wheelset for his Titanium rim braked road bike. He was particularly interested in the Mavic Open Pro UST rims, as he wanted a light rim, and a reliable tubeless profile.  The Mavic rims are certainly very light, they do tubeless well, and their brake surface is lovely. The only downside we see is that (due to their low weight) getting the wheelbuild right requires time (and experience) . Primarily to get...

Paul's "Restomodded" Campagnolo Record on Mavic Open Classic rims

We've built a pair of wheels for Paul in the past, and he came to us to help with his latest project. He's rebuilding a beautiful old steel Paconi in the "restomod" style - classic frame, with mostly modern (read far better to use and more reliable) components. In this case he has selected a lovely silver Campagnolo Centaur 11s group. He had found a pair of late 80s Mavic Open rims, laced to beautiful Suntour Superbe Pro hubs. He asked why we would spend all this time on an older mid level factory wheelset?Like much older Mavic, these wheels were 11s capable from before 11s was a thing. The hubs are very reliable (though not super light). This particular set of rims had seen very little use, but the spokes had become rusty (whilst sitting in storage) and started breaking. We replaced the basic rusty flat bladed spokes with lovely new Sapim Sprint straight pull spokes (a bit thicker Race on...

Rob's dynamo touring wheels - Shutter Precision and Shimano Deore XT

29er Classic DT Swiss Gravel Mavic Shimano

Rob's dynamo touring wheels - Shutter Precision and Shimano Deore XT

Rob wanted two pairs of wheels for his touring and commuting bikes. Both needed dynamo hubs on the front, and he wanted utmost reliability for the rear hub. Ideally standard ball bearings and cones, and a steel freehub. The Shutter Precision PD-8 hub fit the dynamo need perfectly. They are inexpensive, robust, and work well. Also well supported here in Australia. The Shimano Deore XT hub is the perfrect rear touring hub. It's very well made, the bearings are beautiful (and easily serviced) and the freehub is steel, so super tough and resistant to the gouging that can occur with...
