Aaron's New E-Bike Wheel
Alex Rims Sapim Shimano Wheel Builds
Aaron is part of the growing movement of hard hitting e-MTB bikers. He rides really hard (being an ex-motocrosser) and had demolished the original equipment rear wheel on his Merida. We upgraded his rear hub to an e-bike specific Shimano Deore, and built it onto a tough Alexrims MD40 rim - a 40mm internal width "Plus" sized rim that works nicely with the 2.8" tyres Aaron prefers. Plain gauge spokes, brass nipples and some sneaky nipple washers will ensure longevity for years to some.
Evan's Disc "All-Road" Wheels - Novatec Hubs on AlexRims Volar 2.1 29er/700c rims
We repaired a set of original equipment wheels for Evan a few years ago. He came to us to replace those wheels with something lighter, stiffer, and more reliable. He planned to use these wheels for "all road" riding - all bitumen surfaces, and the occasional dirt and gravel. Of course, he needed reliability (it one thing we won't compromise) and wanted to keep weight and price reasonable. Novatec hubs are always a smart choice - inexpensive, super reliable, and easy to source parts for. AlexRims Volar are a tough, light MTB rim that we have used for many gravel/allroad builds...
Richard's Zipp 808 Carbon Alloy Rebuild - new tricks for an old dog
Richard enjoys riding his older Cervelo a couple of hundred km a week. He's keen, but can't see the need to replace this eight year old carbon rig. When his Zipp hub exploded (be warned, if yours hasn't, it will!) he came to us to rebuild the 808 Carbon Alloy wheel with a new hub. As the Cervelo won't take a tyre wider than 25c, these older narrower rims work fine for his needs. We talked through a number of options, and finally agreed that a Bitex RAR series hub would be perfect. Inexpensive, reliable and very light. Sapim plain gauge...
Manfred's Spank Oozy Trail 350 on White Industries XMR Boost Microspline
29er Sapim Spank Wheel Builds White Industries
Manfred is an ex-National Road Champion and winner of many amateur stage races around the world (including the Aussie Commonwealth Bank Classic back in the day). We've known Manfred for well over twenty years, ridden with him heaps, and understand exactly what he needs for his ride. Knowing this, he rang and asked us to build him some wheels, and advised us to "build me what you know will work for me!" So we did. He is not known for being easy on his equipment, nor keeping his stuff super clean, so we chose White Industries XMR Boost hubs for...
Mitch's Mavic Open UST on Velocity Training Wheels
Mavic Sapim Velocity Wheel Builds
About six months ago we repaired a Zipp rear wheel for Mitch. He was really happy with the service and the build, so he contacted us for a training wheelset for his Titanium rim braked road bike. He was particularly interested in the Mavic Open Pro UST rims, as he wanted a light rim, and a reliable tubeless profile. The Mavic rims are certainly very light, they do tubeless well, and their brake surface is lovely. The only downside we see is that (due to their low weight) getting the wheelbuild right requires time (and experience) . Primarily to get...
