Siebrin got in contact for a pair of cyclocross wheels for his new bike, and it just happened that we had just what the doctor ordered.

The HED Belgium series rims are the “Gold Standard” of alloy rims. They are 25mm wide, light (465g measured), nicely finished (shot peened, machined, welded joins) and not crazily priced. Add to the above the fact that they are tubeless ready, they are a natural winner for ‘cross racing.

Cross racing is an endeavour where tubeless really is the way to go. The jury still seems to be out on road tubeless, but in the off road pursuits, lower tyre pressure is better.

Coupled with the wide HED Belgium+ rim, tubeless tyres can be run a significantly lower pressures than their tubed brethren. The result is a smoother ride, greater traction and confidence inspiring cornering grip. The difference in ride between tubed and tubeless tyres is staggering for CX bikes.

Whilst there is an undeniable shift towards carbon wheelsets, in a CX application their only real benefits are that they look cool, and don’t get stuck in the deep mud or sand (as typifies Northern European CX courses). Not always required in the Aussie experience. Our Kiwi bro’s may see the need more than we do here!

A premium rimset like the HED Belgium+ needs the best of hubs, and White Industries T11s are the perfect choice. Light, strong, beautiful, and exceptional value (compared to the competition). these hubs last for many sets of wheels. Once Siebrin has worn the brake tracks out, he’ll be able to re-use them on his next hoops.
