We've helped Marcel out a couple of times now. He loves his new trail technology, and every time he buys a new bike, we get a call from him!
This time he could not resist something very special, the new Mondraker Foxy 29er. Those Spaniards seem to know how to make a sexy bike! Such a sexy new frame needed some sexy and tough wheels for the heavy duty trails that Marcel rides on Sydney's Northern Beaches.
Together we agreed that the Nextie Ultralight 34mm 29″ carbon rim would be a tough, wide, reliable and light front. It's 28mm internal width is plenty wide for the trail tyres Marcel prefers. At 350g for the 29er version, they are super light as well, and still come with a 3 year warranty!
The Nextie Premium 33mm 29" rim has a slightly heavier duty carbon layup, which makes sense for a rear wheel (which tends to take more of a pounding than the front). Only slightly narrower at 27mm, this will be a great rim on the rear - stiff, super tough and still light at 410g each. Again, a 3 year warranty.
Marcel supplied an Industry9 hub that he had recovered from a factory wheelset (not from XLR8!) that had a cracked rim. We built that into the rear, and supplied a White industries CLD+ Boost front hub. Marcel travels a lot, so a Centrelock rotor is always quick and easy to remove when packing the bike and wheels.
To keep stiffness, save weight, and keep cost reasonable, we used Sapim Race doubles butted black spokes, and black brass nipples.
