Michael called with an unusual request - he wanted a pair of wheels to "last the rest of his life!". Just about to retire, and wanted wheels to suit his Yeti that are super reliable, and a modern width for his local rocky Canberra trails.
He still rides pretty gnarly stuff, so we suggested the Project 321 hubs. He liked this idea as their Turquoise colour works well with his Yeti. They are also bombproof and have an industry leading 216 points of engagement! Not expensive either!
We discussed rims for quite a while, and he agreed with our suggestion for a wider rim at the front, and a little less width at the rear. This replicates what we are seeing on World Cup XC and Enduro world series bikes this year, and it makes sense. A wide, lower pressure tyre at the front (for grip and comfort) and a slightly narrower tyre at the rear (for a faster rolling solution, and a smoother grip-to-slide transition for aggressive cornering).
He went with a Nextie Premium Carbon 40mm wide front rim, and a Premium Carbon 35mm rear. Nextie's Premium range uses some t800 carbon content, and comes with a fantastic 3 year warranty. Ensuring these wheels look awesome, he selected solid yellow Nextie decals, which match his Yeti's colour scheme beautifully.
Of course, we used Sapim Race double butted spokes and black brass nipples. These wheels are designed to last for the rest of his life!
