Back when we moved the workshop (10 dog years ago) we found a heap of stock we didn’t know we had. Partial hubsets, pairs of rims, and all manner of stuff.
Rob called us up looking to replace an ailing Fulcrum wheelset for his retro bonded alloy ALAN. He’d enjoyed the ride, but wanted better bearing life, less spoke breakages, and a more retro look to suit his mid 80s daily ride. More stiffness and a little less weight would be nice as well. He asked us if we could build the perfect replacement? Oh, by the way, the wheels needed to have an 8s freehub, as he’d converted this bike’s geartrain some time ago. Silver hubs and spokes would be nice too.
We realised that our old “Rouleur Mk3” rimset was very similar in profile to his Fulcrums, would suit the particular 20c tyres he liked, and we had just one pair left! Matched with some silver Novatec and Shimano 600 hubs (converted to 8s), Sapim Race double butted spokes and alloy nipples, this wheelset tipped the scales at 1670g.
Rob was stoked when we told him that the superseded rims could be had for a song, and he’d manage a pair of awesome handbuilt wheels, for less than the price of replacing his midlevel Fulcrums. Dramatically stiffer, and more conformable to ride as well.
