Joe rides the dead and rough roads around Wollongong and the Royal National Park, and needed to upgrade his ride after having some issues with a factory wheelset.
His preference is for 23c tyres, so a wider rim was preferred. Being quite weight conscious, the Hplusson Archetype was chosen in matte black. These rims have been a staple of ours for quite a few years now. The finish is as good as it gets, the welded rim join means nice smooth braking, and (due to a new distributor here) the pricing is great.
And they’re light too.
They also have a very long life, due to the braking surface being machined before the anodising process occurs – meaning they are nice and thick, so last a long time.
Joe is not particularly heavy, so a 20f/24r build would have been fine, but after some discussion, we agreed that a stiffer rear wheel would offer more response, strength, and the weight and aero disadvantage would be negligible. As a result, this wheelset is 20h front and 28h rear.
As is our usual recommendation for those seeking a set of road hubs that will last forever, the White Industries T11 hubset was selected, in ever so sexy black.
DT Competition double butted spokes were selected for the front wheel. We find them to be slightly stiffer than the equivalent Sapim – good for lower spoke count fronts. Sapim Race double butted were used for the higher spoke count rear. Black brass nipples round out the package for that “Stealth Fighter” look.
And the weight? 1648g.
