We discussed Andrew's specific needs for a build around the Pacenti SL23 tubeless rim. The other build was a higher spoke count wheelset, with exotic superlight spokes. It certainly wasn’t an inexpensive wheelset.
Together we discussed the pros and cons of moving to a lesser spoke count rear wheel, using a thicker plain gauge spoke – less spokes is more aero, thicker spokes make a stiffer wheel and there is a huge saving in cost.
24 plain gauge spokes is more than 30% stiffer than 28 lightweight double butted spokes, laced to the same rim. It’s noticeable in acceleration and out of the saddle climbing! The additional ~30g is not.
Andrew’s wheels are a simple, but very effective spec for his weight. Pacenti Sl23 rims offer all the benefits of the wider format alloy rims, with a nice finish, low weight, and are tubeless compatible.
Laced radial to a 20h White Industries T11 hub, with Sapim Race double butted spokes – the front wheel is light, stiff and looks smart.
We used Sapim Leader plain gauge spokes on the 24h rear (radial offside, and 2x driveside), laced to a T11 again. A very stiff, reliable and aero solution.
