Tim is a local rider who has been riding some Easton wheels for a year or so. He liked them initially for their stiffness and price, but recently they have let him down. After a broken spoke turned into two, the wheel became unrepairable, he decided to have XLR8 rebuild the wheel. His direction to us was “I want it to be better than it was”.
Not as hard as you might think. Easton, Fulcrum and Pro-Lite wheels are great value, but suffer from limited life. Usually machine built, these wheels often use plain gauge spokes to save cost, with incredibly high spoke tensions. This results in early fatigue of the spoke bends.
We replaced the Kinlin XR series rims originally on the Eastons, with top quality H+Son Archetypes, laced to the Easton hubs with black DT spokes. To ensure uniform stiffness of the rear wheel, the driveside spokes are plain gauge, and the non drive side are double butted.
The Archetype rims offer a wider 23mm profile (up from 19mm of the old Eastons) that supports the tyre sidewall better. This enables slightly lower pressures to be used, for more comfort, greater cornering grip and stability, and lower rolling resistance. If you have a factory built wheelset that you are not happy with, let us know. It is possible we can spec up a rebuild of the original hubs that will have you rolling faster, more comfortably, and more reliably than ever.
