Peter contacted us with a specific and unusual need – a challenge we always relish! He was in the middle of a trip around Australia, but was planning to extend it with some cycle touring, and perhaps some XC racing as well! He asked us to spec a 26″ wheelset that would be light enough to ride XC, strong enough to tour with an additional 20kgs of gear (in top of his weight and that of the bike), and must be easy to convert to tubeless.
He also needed a front hub dynamo, as where he is going, there are not a lot of power sockets to charge lights! The excellent SP Dynamo PD-8 front hub was chosen for its reliability and reasonable weight. This was matched to a Velocity Pro rear hub, continuing the lightweight theme.
We selected a pair of Stan’s No Tubes Arch rims, for their excellent weight and durability, and ability to be used with just about any tyre tubeless. This would be fantastic for Pete as he could use touring tyres much of the time, but quickly swap over to an XC tyre when he needs. Sapim double butted Race spokes were laced up with brass nipples for ultimate reliability.
