Project321 Sapim Spank Wheel Builds

Darryn gave us a call seeking some SuperBoost hubs and a build designed to be robust and reliable for riding on Sydney's Northern Beaches trails - rocky with plenty of climbing. So we needed to ensure they were not too heavy as well.

The SuperBoost rear-axle standard isn’t totally new – hubs with 157x12mm axle spacing have existed on DH bikes for years.

However, the majority of those hubs used the same hub flange spacing as old 135×10mm quick-release hubs (and 142x12mm thru-axle hubs). New SuperBoost hubs have the same DH 157mm axle spacing but have hub flanges that are even wider than 148x12mm Boost rear hubs, giving the spokes a wider bracing angle, leading to stronger rear wheels. To date we haven't seen a massive take up in the standard, but it is here to stay.

Project321 make great hubs and offer both 157mm options. Darryn selected their Orange anodised version.

The Spank 350 is an awesome trail rim. Light and tough enough for the vast majority of riders, they also look cool, and have an awesome tubeless specific profile.

Of course, Sapim Race double butted spokes and black brass nipples are the wide choice for a tough set of hoops.
