We’ve built wheels in the past for Campbell, and his feedback was that they were the best he’d owned.
He had favourably compared them to his Shimano DuraAce C35 wheelset, and when an accident damaged his rear C35, he came to us for a repair or rebuild.
Shimano C35 replacement rims are available, however they are prohibitively expensive. As a result, we suggested migrating to a wider and deeper carbon rim. Lighter, more aero and stiffer.
The C35 hub is a beautiful thing. Reasonably light, with a super stiff hubshell. The bearings and races are as good as can be bought. It made sense to reuse it. However, the C35 wheelset uses a 21 spoke triplet lacing pattern. That means that there are twice as many spokes on the driveside of the wheel as there are on the non-driveside. Specifically drilled rims are required, or some modifications needed.
We selected a rim from a well known manufacturer, and skip laced the non-driveside of the wheel. The outcome is a wheel easily as stiff and light as the original, but more aero and less expensive.
A great outcome! The good news is that this can be done for front wheels as well, and for the C50 wheelset.
